Good Friday

29 Mar

Something that has really hit me hard within the past couple years is the amount of suffering that Mary, the mother of Jesus, went through.  Jesus definitely went through much more suffering than did Mary, however the suffering of Mary has hit me in a big way, I think because I can relate to her femininity and desire to protect and defend the innocent.

Last year I was a leader for a Catholic high school retreat and I was blessed to be able to give a talk on Mary.  The talk focused on the suffering of Mary, standing at the foot of the Cross, and how much pain and sorrow she underwent while watching her Son Jesus.  She witnessed Him beaten, spit upon, mocked, ridiculed, betrayed, killed.

Yesterday I watched a play of the Last Supper, acted out by eighth grade students.  The young girl who played the role of Mary, was sOoooo realistic.  She even cried when she was explaining all the suffering she (Mary) would endure during Jesus’ Passion and death.

It was heart-wrenching.  It even made ME cry.  It made me cry not only for Mary, but also for Jesus and for my sins and the sins of mankind.

The suffering of Mary, watching her only Son, when He was blameless, innocent, and GOD HIMSELF.

The suffering of Jesus for YOU, for ME, for mankind.  The love He has for us.  The love this compels us to have for each other, ourselves, and for Jesus.

Today let us walk with Mary and Jesus along the way of the Cross.

“Lord, let me walk that lonely road with You, under the weight of the wood.  Lord, let me walk that last mile in Your shoes, under the weight of the wood.”
